The History Behind the Mercedes-Benz Logo

The origins behind the Mercedes-Benz brand started back in 1890 with the founder, Gottlieb Daimler. While Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek took over the company (then called Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, or DMG) in 1890, Daimler’s legacy was carried on by his sons, Paul and Adolf, for years to come.  The iconic Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star didn’t come into the picture until 1909, when the brothers came across a postcard sent by their father in 1872 that marked the location of their home with that distinctive 3-pointed star. With this discovery, the 3-pointed star was acquired by DMG and became the symbol for these impressive vehicles.  The progression of the logo then developed over the years. What started at a blue Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star was revised with a laurel border in 1926. Then, in 1934, it became the silver star we recognize today.

Exploring the Mercedes-Benz Logo Meaning

What does the Mercedes-Benz logo mean? Is the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning tied to the Daimler sons’ filial piety, or is there hidden meaning in this notable symbol? The answer varies depending on who you ask; however, according to Mercedes-Benz officials, there a bit more to the story:

  • The Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star actually hints at the company’s drive for universal motorization! The Daimler brothers believed that their company would one day make their mark on the Land, Sea, and Air–represented by the three points of the star.

What Does the Mercedes-Benz AMG® Logo Mean?

The Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo may seem more mysterious, like a symbol found on an old map or something found within a secret society. However, the origins aren’t so mystic:

  • The right side of the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo highlights the brand’s passion for engineering. This is reflected in the Mercedes-Benz AMG® engine showcasing essential parts like a cam, valve, and valve spring.
  • The left side of the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo hints at the history of the town where Mercedes-Benz AMG® headquarters is located: Affalterbach, Germany. The town’s coat of arms depicts an apple tree located along a river.
