How to Lock or Unlock a Steering Wheel

2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA Steering Wheel

If your vehicle won’t turn on, we can teach you how to unlock a steering wheel in three steps. Just proceed with caution, since trying to force your wheel to move can cause serious damage to your steering system! If you have any trouble with the steps, call for roadside assistance or reach out to our service center at Call service Phone Number(877) 622-9538.

How to Unlock a Steering Wheel in Three Steps

If you’re trying to start your commute to Providence or East Greenwich, a locked steering wheel can be very frustrating! Thankfully, it’s actually quite easy to get back on the road:

  1. Test the steering wheel. One direction will allow for a little more movement than the other.
  2. Gently turn the steering wheel in whichever direction offers the most room for movement. Hold it in place while you insert the key into the ignition.
  3. Gently turn the key while you continue to hold the steering wheel in the right direction. This action should unlock your steering wheel and start the car.

If the first key doesn’t work, try a different one. Keys can get worn down over time, and anything less than a perfect fit will fail to trigger the mechanisms that unlock your steering wheel. Need a new key? Get in touch with our parts department.

Unlocking a Steering Wheel: Tips to Keep in Mind

As we noted from the outset, it’s important to work gently and carefully when you’re learning how to unlock a steering wheel for the first time. It’s easy to damage your internal components, so keep these tips in mind:

  • Take good care of your ignition. If you can’t get the key into the tumblers, dirt and dust may be blocking the way. If you can’t turn the key, don’t force it. You could damage your ignition switch and get trapped on the side of the road.
  • Brute force will never unlock a steering wheel. If you aren’t careful, you may have to bring your vehicle in for repairs.

How to Lock Your Steering Wheel Intentionally

Although many drivers lock their steering wheels by mistake, security-conscious drivers may also want to lock their wheel before turning in for the evening. That’s because a steering wheel lock provides an extra measure of safety in the event that your vehicle is broken into. Without the key, the vehicle’s steering wheel will remain stuck in place!

Here’s how to lock a steering wheel intentionally:

  1. Turn off the car and remove the key.
  2. Turn the steering wheel in whichever direction you prefer, until you hear a click.
