How To Fix a Small Dent in a Car

Whether you accidentally dinged your car at home or you parked in a busy parking lot in Cranston and noticed a small door dent on your vehicle, there’s no need to worry. Oftentimes, these small dings and dents can easily be repaired if it’s nothing major. Of course, if it’s a bigger dent and you’re not comfortable with attempting to fix it yourself, you’ll want to leave it to the professionals. With that being said, here’s how to fix a small dent in a car:

  • Plunger: While you can use a regular plunger, you can also opt for a car dent plunger that’s specifically designed to remove small dents from your car. You can essentially use the plunger on the dent and pop it out using the plunger.
  • Dent Puller: When you visit a professional, they may also use a dent puller. Some auto parts stores may have a DIY dent puller kit you can use. Essentially, you’ll attach a couple of suction devices to the dent. There will then be a tool that’ll help you slowly pull out the dent. Some dent pullers even require you to drill into the dent to pull it back to the surface. For those advanced dent-pulling tools, you’ll need to fill the hole, sand it down, and paint it.
  • Hammer/Mallet: If the dent is on a door, you can remove the door panel and get access behind the dent. This may also be possible if the dent is on something like your hood or somewhere where you can get behind the dent. You’ll then want to use a small hammer or rubber mallet and carefully push the dent out from the back.

How To Buff out Scratches on a Car

Now that you know how to fix a dent in a car door, are you wondering about the steps on how to buff out scratches on a car? Similar to removing a dent, you’ll want to leave it to the professionals if you’re not comfortable with removing the scratch on your own. Take a look at how to remove scratches on a car below:

  • Candle Wax: While candle wax isn’t a permanent solution, you can simply take a candle and gently rub the wax onto the scratch. This will help protect the scratch before you get it professionally fixed.
  • Super Glue: Similar to candle wax, using super glue can be a temporary solution to help protect the scratch from the elements before you get it fixed.
  • Buff It Out: You can often opt for a buffing compound to fix the scratch if it’s not too deep. You can essentially start with a light polish and a foam pad to start buffing out the scratch. If the light polish isn’t working, you can slowly work your way up to a more aggressive buffing compound until the scratch has been removed. We recommend you protect your vehicle’s paint and apply a clear coat after it has been buffed.
  • Wet Sanding: You can attempt to use fine-grit sandpaper with some water to buff out the scratch. Once you’ve removed the scratch, you can attempt to apply a fine polish and then a wax or clear count to protect the paint.
  • Touch-Up Paint: If it’s a smaller scratch, you can often use a touch-up paint pen to repair it. Most touch-up paint pens can be color-matched to your vehicle’s paint. They often come with a small abrasive end to clean out the scratch, which you can then use the paint pen tip to fill in the scratch and finally cover it with a clear coat.
