Six Steps for How to Check Your Transmission Fluid

Before we go over how to check your transmission fluid, it’s important to understand your Mercedes-Benz may have a sealed transmission. Newer Mercedes-Benz models with a sealed transmission will need the fluid checked at our service center.

However, if you’ve got an older Mercedes-Benz model, you may have the ability to check your transmission fluid in your own home near Cranston. We suggest you reference your owner’s manual for confirmation or you can simply visit our service center for assistance. With that being said, here’s how to check your transmission fluid if you’ve got an older Mercedes-Benz model:

  1. Warm up your engine by starting your vehicle and letting it run for a few minutes.
  2. Make sure your vehicle is in park and turned off. You’ll also want to ensure your vehicle is on level ground.
  3. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. Typically, the dipstick is located near your engine oil dipstick. You can often reference your owner’s manual for more information.
  4. Remove the oil dipstick and inspect the fluid. You’ll want to ensure the fluid is almost clear and doesn’t smell burnt. If the fluid appears dirty or has a burnt smell, you may want to visit a service center immediately.
  5. Clean off the dipstick and insert it back into your vehicle. Now, remove the dipstick once more and take note of your transmission fluid level.
  6. If the level is correct, put the dipstick back and close your hood. You can visit our service team if your transmission fluid level is incorrect.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

So, how often do you check your transmission fluid? In certain vehicles, it may be a good idea to inspect your transmission fluid as often as once a month. However, vehicles with a sealed transmission could have their transmission fluid checked more often or less frequently depending on your driving habits.

Your owner’s manual may have suggestions on when you should be checking your transmission fluid. However, if you notice any of the following signs during your drives, it may be a good idea to have your transmission serviced:

  • Hesitation during gear changes
  • Unusual noises as your vehicle is shifting
  • Delayed acceleration
  • Burning smell
  • Leaking transmission fluid
