How To Check Your Coolant Level

Coolant Car Check

There are many components that work together in your vehicle to ensure you enjoy a smooth driving experience on the Providence roads. One major component you may not be aware of is coolant. Coolant is essentially a fluid that helps your vehicle regulate its temperature. The main job of coolant is to ensure your vehicle doesn’t overheat as you’re driving around East Greenwich.

If you ever notice that your car is leaking coolant or your coolant level is low, it’s important that you visit a trusted parts center to ensure you’re filling your vehicle up with the correct coolant. Not sure how to check your coolant level? Our service experts at Mercedes-Benz of Warwick are here to assist. We’re going to go over how to inspect your coolant level and touch on what to do if your car is leaking coolant. Learn more below!

Illuminated Coolant Level Sensor – How To Check Your Coolant Level

If your coolant level sensor has been illuminated, you’ll want to ensure that your coolant level isn’t low. Many vehicles allow you to inspect your coolant without even having to open the radiator cap. This is a major benefit as sometimes it can be dangerous to add coolant to your vehicle if you don’t know what you’re doing.

The steps to check if your coolant level is low can vary depending on your specific vehicle so we recommend your reference your owner’s manual for specifics. Otherwise, you can take a look below at some general directions for checking your vehicle’s coolant level:

  1. Ensure your vehicle is off and open the hood.
  2. Locate the coolant reservoir in your engine bay. It’s often a clear or semi-clear bottle that has markings on the side of the reservoir.
  3. Without opening the radiator cap or the reservoir cap, take a look at the side of the coolant reservoir. You’ll notice a “full” marking line and if the coolant level is correct, you’re likely not losing any coolant.

If you find that your car is leaking coolant and you need to add more, we recommend leaving it up to a service technician to assist. You don’t want to add the incorrect amount or type of coolant as that can damage your vehicle and even leave you stranded on the side of the road in Cranston.

How Do You Know You Need To Schedule a Service Appointment?

As we mentioned, coolant plays an important role and it’s not something you should ignore if you notice you’re low on coolant. If you’re driving around town and you notice any of these things, we recommend you schedule a service appointment immediately:

  • Coolant is leaking from your vehicle
  • Coolant appears thick and sludge-like
  • Coolant is an unusual color such as brown, black, or colorless
