How Many Miles Do Tires Last?

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG® A-Class Tire

How many miles should tires last? The high-performance, low-profile tires on Mercedes-Benz vehicles should be replaced every one to two years, or every 15,000 to 20,000 miles. However, the answer to this question ultimately depends on a variety of factors. Different kinds of tires have different life expectancies, and tires may expire prematurely without proper care and maintenance.

Having a general understanding of how many miles tires last can be helpful, but it’s more important to note that tires need to be replaced when the tread depth falls to 2/32 of an inch or lower, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. We’ll take a look at your tires whenever you schedule service appointments, but you can also pick up a tread gauge from our parts department if you’d like to inspect your tires at home.

What Factors Affect Tire Life Expectancy?

Low-profile tires last around two years on average—assuming that you drive about as much as the average driver in East Greenwich or Cranston. However, this timeline can vary, so remember to look at each tire’s treadwear rating before you equip it on your vehicle. Choose tires with higher treadwear ratings if you want your tires to last longer.

If you want to extend the life of your tires, you should also be sure to keep up with your maintenance schedule:

  • You should check your tire pressure at home at least once per month. Without adequate pressure, your tires won’t last as long—and the same is true if your tire pressure is too high.
  • If you’re not having your tires rotated at regular intervals, the tires that receive power from your drivetrain will wear down more quickly than those that don’t.
  • If your wheels are out of balance or misaligned, your tires will wear down at a faster rate. You’ll also have to deal with uneven tread wear.

How you drive and where you drive can have an impact too:

  • Driving on dirt and gravel roads, or through heavy construction, can be harder on your tires than driving on pavement.
  • Roads with steep inclines require your tires to work harder, so driving on flatter roads may help your tires last longer.
  • Accelerating gently and coasting to a stop can help your tires last longer too! Driving hard takes a more significant toll.

Most new tires include tread wear bars. This simple but effective tool sits within the tread and becomes flush with the edge of the tire when it’s time for replacement, so you can skip the guesswork and know exactly when you’re due for a new set.

Why Should You Choose Low-Profile Tires?

Low-profile tires have been designed to help you get more out of your vehicle’s performance capabilities—but why should you choose high-performance tires over an all-season alternative? The following benefits are impossible to ignore:

  • Compared to all-season tires, low-profile tires have more points of contact with the road. As a result, you’ll enjoy superior traction—as well as sharper handling in all conditions.
  • With improved grip, less energy is needed in order to move your vehicle forward. In other words, low-profile tires allow your vehicle to consume less fuel, day-in and day-out.
  • Low-profile tires are generally paired with larger rims—and larger rims allow for the installation of larger braking systems. You’ll be able to stop more quickly.
