Comparing Types of Electric Cars

Close Up Of Hand Holding Power Cable For electric car

You’ll notice many different types of electric vehicles in the Mercedes-Benz inventory, but what separates the types of electric cars? And more importantly, what types of electric vehicles will fit your lifestyle the best in Providence? From hybrids to battery electric cars and even fuel cell vehicles, get to know the range of green technology available at Mercedes-Benz of Warwick.

What are the Different Types of Electric Vehicles?

When looking at the range of hybrid and electric vehicles on the market today, you can identify at least four distinctive types of electric cars. Although not all of them are common on the roads near East Greenwich and Cranston, it’s still important to be aware of what’s out there. Here are the primary characteristics and differences between designs:

  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles: A hybrid vehicle runs primarily on gas, but the motor and self-charging battery supplement your performance. This boosts gas mileage, while allowing you to simply fuel up at a gas station. There’s no need to charge your battery externally.
  • Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles: A PHEV is even more fuel efficient than the traditional hybrid, because it has a larger battery capacity. Plug-in models can also run purely on electricity for short distances, and you can charge your battery at any charging station around Cranston—or even at home.
  • Battery Electric Vehicles: Battery electric vehicles are fully powered by electricity, so they need to be charged at a charging station. Most drivers install a home charging station right in their own garage. Additionally, EV models have no combustion engine – which means no more oil changes, no more trips to the gas station, and vastly simplified maintenance overall.
  • Hydrogen Electric Vehicles (Fuel Cell): Fuel cell models are the least common type of electric vehicles—and due to limited hydrogen refueling infrastructure, they’re only available in certain parts of the U.S. Since these vehicles run on hydrogen, they can be fueled in minutes and do not need to be plugged in for long periods of time. However, they are usually more expensive than the more common types of electric cars.
