How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car?

Mercedes-Benz EV Charging

Electric car charging times are improving all the time, but how long does it take to charge an electric car today? It depends on which model you choose, and on the charging method you employ—but the following rules tend to hold in most cases:

  • Level 2 At-Home Charging: With a professionally installed wallbox, a single night is generally all you need to recharge. Just plug in after dinner—you’ll be ready to go in the morning.
  • Level 1 At-Home Charging: Without a professionally installed wallbox, you may need days to fully recharge an electric vehicle at home.
  • Public Charging: In public, you can often choose between Level 2 and Level 3 charging. Level 2 public charging is about as fast as home charging with a professional wallbox. Level 3 charging is much faster, and you can generally use this method to fully charge your vehicle in an hour or less.

Electric Car Charging Times: The EQS from Mercedes-EQ

The 2022 EQS is an all-electric sedan from Mercedes-EQ—and whether you’re at home in Warwick or on the road in Providence, it’s easy to recharge this vehicle in a hurry:

  • Level 2 Charging (At-Home Wallbox or Public, 240V @ 9.4 kW): Charge from 10% to 100% in 11.25 hours
  • Level 3 DC Fast Charging (Public, 480V @ 200 kW): Add up to 90 miles in 10 minutes, or charge from 10% to 80% in 31 minutes

The 2022 EQS has a maximum range of 350 miles, so you can drive from Warwick, RI to Philadelphia, PA with just under 90 miles of range to spare. You’ll also have plenty of power at every stage of the journey.

The good news continues: Drivers who purchase a new EQS will enjoy free 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America DC fast chargers for up to two years from the date of their purchases!

Hybrid vs. Electric Car Charging Times

You’ve seen how much time you’ll need to charge an electric car—but what if you’re not yet ready to jump into the all-electric future? If you’ve done any research about hybrids and EVs, you probably already know that a plug-in hybrid is a great choice for the driver who wants the best of both worlds. Plug-in hybrid electric car charging times are much lower—usually one to four hours with Level 2 charging—and you can rely on gasoline when no electric power is available.
