If you’re an electric vehicle owner or interested in becoming one, you know that charging is essential for your Providence commutes. But are electric car chargers universal? Will you need to buy a new charger if you switch to a new EV? The good news is that almost every electric car charger is universal! Almost all EVs use the same standard plug for Level 1 and Level 2 charging, which are the most common types of charging. The only exception is the Tesla Supercharger, which is exclusive to Tesla vehicles.
To learn more about the different types of electric car chargers, keep reading with Mercedes-Benz of Warwick. And don’t forget to check out our selection of new vehicles, where you can find fuel-efficient EVs.
In East Greenwich, there are three types of electric car chargers available for drivers: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Each charger type differs in charging speed and location. To help you understand the differences, here is a breakdown of the different electric car chargers, their typical charging speeds, and where you can typically find them:
With a charging speed of around 3 to 5 miles per hour, Level 1 chargers use a 120-volt household outlet and can charge any EV by simply plugging the charging equipment into a standard wall outlet. While Level 1 charging is the slowest method, it is suitable for plug-in hybrid vehicles due to their smaller battery size. However, it may not be the best option for drivers who frequently travel long distances. Level 1 charging is more suitable for EV drivers in Cranston who don’t plan on venturing too far from home.
Level 2 charging provides an EV with an additional range of around 12 to 80 miles per hour of charging. It’s a great option for those who use their EV for daily errands, commuting, and long-distance travel. Level 2 chargers can be installed at home, workplaces, or public locations such as plazas. Installing a Level 2 charging system at home can significantly reduce charging time compared to using a Level 1 charger.
Level 3 charging is the fastest charging option available, with speeds ranging from around 3 to 20 miles per minute. Unlike Level 1 and Level 2 chargers, which use an alternating current, Level 3 chargers utilize a direct current. However, due to the much higher voltage required for Level 3 charging, these types of chargers are not typically found in residential homes as most households are not equipped with the necessary power capacity. Level 3 chargers are primarily located in public charging stations and are ideal for long-distance travel and quick charging on the go.
